What is Magnesium?

Magnesium is an incredibly important mineral, involved in over 300 different processes within the human body.   It plays a significant role in our nerves and muscles which are large parts of Chiropractic care.

Shockingly, almost 40% of Australians could be deficient in daily magnesium intake, even worse in older ages.

How are we deficient?

Modern day lifestyle stress can cause increased loss of magnesium, the results of which can mimic stress-related symptoms and worsen chronic stress, causing further loss of magnesium – a vicious cycle.

Studies also suggest malabsorption, high stress levels, various diseases, certain drugs and magnesium deficient soils and therefore grains and vegetables can be to blame.

What happens if we don’t have enough magnesium?

The consequences of magnesium deficiency can be significant and contribute to low-grade inflammation, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and diabetes.

Inadequate magnesium levels can also result in headaches/migraines, muscle cramps, digestive cramps, increased menstrual pain, pre-mature labour and increased pain sensitivity.

Supplementing with magnesium can be considered for many clinical concerns such as:

  • Neuromuscular dysfunction
  • Headache / Migraine
  • Pain and Inflammation
  • Sleep issues
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Stress and neuro-endocrine (hormonal) imbalance
  • Female reproductive issues
  • Impaired energy function

Bottom Line?

Modern life can be the cause of a lot of physiological and psychological stress, affecting our health and wellbeing.  By correcting magnesium deficiency alongside your Chiropractic care, you can help support your nervous system and mitochondrial function, promote cellular healing, and improve our ability to adapt to the stress of modern life!
